West Jefferson has the best collection of art galleries in the mountains of North Carolina. People travel from far and near to spend the day browsing the galleries that line the streets of our quaint downtown district. This truly is a town that celebrates the visual arts, and that can best be seen in the many vibrant murals that adorn the walls of our downtown buildings.
In case you've never witnessed it before, just driving through town is a gallery visit in itself.
Most people put on their comfortable shoes and spend the day in West Jefferson, going from one gallery to the next. They then top off the day with a nice meal at one of several downtown resturants. Mixed among the galleries you will find interesting gifts shops, boutiques, and antique stores.
There is plenty to make your day memorable in West Jefferson.
Several times a year, our galleries and artist studios fling open their doors for a festive downtown Gallery Crawl, sponsored by Ashe County Arts Council. These events are free and open to the public and always generate a good turnout of friendly faces. This celebration of the arts showcases the many talented artists who call Ashe County their home.
